Our May monthly drill schedule kicked off on Monday night May 5 with an introduction to water rescue operations. With a mixture of classroom and some hands on, DC Fritz conducted the training session which was geared towards getting personnel ready for the upcoming storm season. Policies, procedures and personal protective equipment were the focus of this session. In the coming weeks, the training will become more hands on. TSFR does not operate a fully accredited swift water or dive rescue team. Fortunately, we have others in the area that can provide that service. However, we frequently do encounter minor urban flooding situations that require us to be exposed to water hazards. And, in the event that we require the more specialized service, we can provide support operations as a force multiplier. Members and residents are reminded that it only takes 6" of water flowing to knock an adult off their feet and sweep them downstream. Just as importantly, remember that it only takes 24" of water to move a car, and you can't see thru a flooded roadway to know if the road is washed out, or storm drains or manholes are open. Tis the season.....be careful out there. |
