A reported explosion and fire at a PPL substation on Yerger Blvd in the North Whitfield section of Spring Township occurred on Monday evening July 13. County Communications advised that a transformer exploded, was smoking and arcing and that power was out in the area. Further confirmation of fire in the substation yard was provided by a Spring Twp PD officer on location. The Comm Center also advised that a utility crew was enroute and that they advised all personnel to stay out of the yard.

Upon arrival, E85 and Deputy 85 witnessed a fire on the top of equipment but contained within the fenced area. As such E85 maintained a standby position awaiting the utility while DC 85 checked on nearby nursing and healthcare facilities to verify their power status. All had power as had most of the surrounding area. E85 maintained scene control and surveillance until PPL arrived and the company released to respond on a subsequent call in the Township.
