2nd grade students from Whitfield Elementary visited the station last week for their Fire Prevention activity. This week a combination of old school and new school education techniques were used to teach the remainder of the student body.
On Monday October 21, TSFR personnel visited the school in person to meet with 179 Kindergarten and 1st graders plus 18 faculty members to go over fire prevention basics. This covered smoke and CO detectors, how to get out of the house, stop drop and roll, and how to call 911 in an emergency. The contingent was led by Public Education Lt. Steve Gibbs and included Fire Chief Hackman and the crew from TSFR D Platoon.
Then on Friday morning October 25, approximately 300 students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes were treated to a virtual tour of the station conducted by Lt. Gibbs. This was made possible by doing a 45-mminute walk-around using an iPad to broadcast the images to the students in their classrooms. This included seeing the duties of the TSFR A Platoon (the assigned shift for the day) and getting a close-up look at the vehicles in the station.
Later that day TSFR members participated in the annual Halloween Trunk-or-Treat event at the Spring Ridge Elementary School, where personnel handed out candy and fire prevention literature from 6-9 PM. Approximately 400 plastic fire helmets and several pounds of candy were distributed. |
