A garage fire on Howard St in the Springmont section of Spring Twp sent TSFR Rescue Engine 85, West Reading Engine 64, Kenhorst Engine 69, Shillington Engine 36, Wyo FD Ladder 79, Mohnton Ladder 57, Muhlenberg Company 66 RIT and Western Berks EMS Medic 6512 on a hot and muggy night of June 29. Communications reported multiple reports of a garage on fire with ammunition possibly inside. RE85 under Capt Neubert arrived with fire showing from the 1st floor of a 20' x 30' 2 story garage. Captain 85 assumed command on Ops 3 until DC85 arrived on location. RE85s crew stretched a 200' 2" hoseline and a portable master stream to the front of the building as water supply was established at a hydrant in front of the address.
Deputy 85 (Schartel) arrived and assumed command after a briefing from Capt 85. L79's crew under Capt Yeager made entry to the second floor to complete a primary search which was negative. Additional crews from E69 and E36 went to the second floor to check for extension with none found. Mutual aid personnel also provided ground ladders and relief crews. PPL and UGI were both requested to the scene to assist with securing their respective utilities.
Twp Fire Marshal Hatt was requested to perform the investigation assisted by PSP Fire Marshal Herb.
