Early in the morning of Saturday June 14, the alerts sounded for a possible structure fire, reported to be the rear of a house in the 2100 block of Penn Avenue in the West Lawn section of Spring Township. TSFRS Engine 85, Wyomissing Ladder 79, Western Berks FD Ladder 18, West Reading Engine 64, Shillington Engine 36, Mohnton Engine 57, Muhlenberg Engine 66 (RIT), and Western Berks EMS along with fire police from several companies responded.
Additional information from several callers however clarified that the fire was a railroad car located on Norfolk Southern's Lebanon Valley line, which runs along the rear of the properties on Penn Ave. Upon arrival, E85 observed that the fire involved a gondola style rail car, loaded with trash which was well involved. The AskRail app was used to confirm the contents of the car as being trash which was confirmed by visual observation. L79 arrived behind E85 and It was decided to use the ladder pipe to apply water due to the elevation of the track. E36 laid 5" from a hydrant on Penn Ave which was picked up by E64. Additionally, L18 raised its aerial on the opposite side of the track and was supplied by E57. With both aerials flowing, short work was made of the fire in the cleanest and simplest method.
The train was then turned back over to Norfolk Southern for removal.
