July 11, 2026

On the morning of July 11, TSFRS Engine 85 was dispatched to a nursing facility on Reading Avenue in West Reading to assist Station 64 on a fire alarm assignment that was upgraded to a structure fire almost immediately. E85 arrived and assumed first due engine responsibilities, connected to the sprinkler/standpipe the fire department connection and established their own water supply. The crew then met up with Wyomissing Ladder 79s crew on the 4th floor and encountered a smoke conditionin the hallway. E85s personnel did a primary search of the effected hallway which proved negative and then assisted L79 members on the roof with locating a damaged HVAC unit and shutting it down.

Captain 85 assisted with coordinating with the nursing staff and WBEMS Medic 6521 with relocating the effected rooms to the 2nd and 1st floor. Once all residents were accounted for, Captains 85 and 79 did a face to face with Command and all units staged outside. Units remained on location while command determined if further evacuations were necessary due to the power outage in the building.

While standing by E85 and L79 were then alerted to a report of smoke in the kitchen of the same premises, unrelated to the original incident. E85s crew along with L79 investigated to find a smoking pan of butter in the kitchen. Crews removed the substance and ventilated the smoke. Command was advised of the situation and conditions found. E85 continued to assist with ventilation until the smoke condition in the kitchen was cleared. This incident was then terminated, and the assignment remained on location in staging for the original fire until released by Command.

85 Fire Police assisted with establishing and maintaining traffic control around the building until released by Command.

Units: Engine 85, EMA 43
