E Bike and Mobility Battery Safety

One of the most popular uses for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor, otherwise known as an E Bike. In addition to posing certain traffic safety concerns, which have been widely communicated by police and other traffic safety advocates, most people are unaware of the enhanced fire safety risk posed by the battery system. The issue also extends to what are known as micromobility devices which include scooters, hoverboards, seques and wheel chairs.

Lithium-Ion batteries can go into thermal runaway almost at any time, but especially while being charged. When this occurs, the battery first expands and then expels vast quantities of toxic gases, which alone are extremely dangerous and when inhaled can cause death and long-term physical disability. Further, some of the vapor components are extremely flammable and will ignite explosively. This will cause a pressure wave followed by a flame front which instantly engulfs everything around them in fire.

Therefore, experts recommend that E-Bikes and other electromotive devices such as hoverboards, scooters and carts be charged outside if possible, or in an area like a garage that is separated from sleeping areas and exit pathways. They also recommend that charging only be done during waking hours and not while occupants are asleep.
