Over the past several years, the use of lithium ion battery-operated equipment and vehicles have increased significantly. These devices have been incorporated into our everyday activities. Just think how many battery-operated devices are now in your home, such as lawn equipment, drills, cellular phones, bikes and vehicles. Even our toothbrush maybe battery operated. Simply look around your home and work and you may discover many more uses. Each of these are powered by lithium ion batteries.

These batteries have been the source of fires. One E-bike was recently the cause of the massive 5 alarm fire that destroyed a building. The batteries will ignite due to overheating or defects. If a battery fails, it will burst into flames and cause significant damage.

If you notice the battery getting hot, try to move it to a safe location and cut off the energy supply. If your electric appliance or vehicle is on fire, immediately evacuate the area. DO NOT attempt to extinguish the fire. Call 911 immediately.

Here are some things you can do to reduce the risk:
• Buy lithium ion battery powered products from reputable sources
• Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made specifically for the device.
• Buy replacement batteries from the original manufacturer. Stay away from cheaper or cheaply made no name or knock off manufacturers.
• Register your products and check for recalls if you suspect one has been issued.
• Keep any physically damaged batteries or products outside and away from your home.
• If possible, charge batteries and products away from the living area of your home.
• Remove batteries or products from the charger as soon as charging is completed.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WORKING SMOKE DETECTORS THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME. If you do not have a smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector, or they need to be replaced, please contact Township of Spring Fire Rescue at 610-898-1452.
